Everyday life

Everyday routines, with room to be human.

A gentle way to think about predictability, transitions and the days that do not go to plan.

Choose one moment to understand

Instead of redesigning the whole day, choose a moment you would like to discuss with your child’s team: getting dressed, leaving for school or finishing a favorite activity. Notice what happens around it, including noise, time pressure and how much help is available.

Describe what you see without assigning blame. ‘Getting shoes on takes longer when we are rushing’ gives a team something concrete to explore.

Make the next step easier to understand

CDC describes visual schedules and clear structure among educational supports used with autistic people. Ask your child’s team whether a simple picture sequence, a demonstration or another cue fits your child’s communication and sensory needs.

  • Ask which part of the routine is unclear or uncomfortable.
  • Include space for choices and breaks when planning together.
  • Use examples from your actual home rather than an ideal schedule.
  • Agree on what to do when plans change.

Notice the fit, not just completion

After trying an agreed support, tell the team what felt easier and what still felt hard. Completing an activity is only part of the picture; comfort, communication and the amount of help needed also belong in the conversation.

If a routine becomes more distressing, pause and ask for individualized guidance. A blog cannot determine why a particular situation is difficult or prescribe the right response for your child.
